Identity and purity are commonly assessed by high-performance liquid chromatography, often with ultraviolet detection, and by spectroscopic techniques such as infrared or nuclear magnetic resonance. These methods can distinguish creatine from creatinine and detect related impurities. Moisture content may be measured by Karl Fischer titration or loss on drying. Particle size, bulk density, and heavy metal limits are additional quality parameters. Not every product is tested by every method, so specifications depend on the intended use and regulatory framework.
Solid creatine monohydrate is generally stable when kept dry and protected from extremes of heat and humidity. In the presence of moisture, it can gradually convert to creatinine, a cyclic dehydration product that has little value for phosphocreatine synthesis. Elevated temperatures and acidic conditions accelerate this conversion in solution. Because the reaction is slow in cool, dry storage, typical shelf lives are measured in years rather than weeks. Packaging that limits moisture and oxygen exposure helps maintain purity.
Recommended storage usually involves a sealed container kept at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and moisture. High humidity can cause caking, which changes flow properties and may complicate accurate weighing. Repeated opening of containers exposes the powder to air and moisture, so smaller aliquots can reduce handling effects. Storage temperature ranges are not absolute requirements; they reflect conditions that slow degradation and preserve consistent physical characteristics. Clean, dry tools help prevent contamination during sampling.
In the body, creatine is obtained from dietary meat and fish and is also synthesized from arginine, glycine, and methionine. Muscle stores creatine and phosphocreatine, which participate in the rapid regeneration of adenosine triphosphate during short, intense activity. The monohydrate form is used in research because it is chemically defined, stable as a dry solid, and relatively inexpensive to produce. Questions remain about whether other creatine forms offer meaningful advantages in absorption or tissue retention, and findings vary across studies and populations.
Creatine monohydrate is a crystalline compound formed from creatine and one molecule of water. Creatine itself is a nitrogen-containing organic acid that occurs in vertebrate muscle and other tissues. The monohydrate designation refers to the water included in the crystal lattice, not to water added during manufacturing. Its chemical formula is commonly written as C4H9N3O2·H2O. The solid is typically a white, odorless powder with low solubility in water at room temperature. It is one of several creatine forms described in scientific and commercial literature.
| Property | Value | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Typical storage temperature | 15–25 °C | Cool, dry, sealed conditions slow conversion to creatinine. |
| Moisture sensitivity | Moderate | Absorbs water from humid air, which can cause caking. |
| Primary purity method | HPLC-UV | Separates creatine from creatinine and related impurities. |
| Moisture method | Karl Fischer titration | Measures water content; loss on drying is an alternative. |
| Degradation product | Creatinine | Forms by dehydration, especially in solution or humid heat. |
Quality assessment of creatine monohydrate typically uses high-performance liquid chromatography to separate creatine from creatinine and other impurities. Other methods include nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, titration, and infrared spectroscopy for identity confirmation. Purity is often reported as a percentage of the labeled compound on a dry basis, while moisture content is measured separately. Because different analytical methods have different selectivity, comparing purity values across sources requires attention to the method and sample preparation.
In dry solid form, creatine monohydrate is relatively stable when protected from moisture and heat. The crystal lattice includes water, and exposure to high humidity can cause caking or gradual changes in powder flow. Elevated temperatures may accelerate decomposition, particularly if moisture is present. Studies generally report that sealed, dry material retains acceptable purity for extended periods, although exact shelf life depends on packaging and storage conditions. Light exposure is not usually considered a major factor for this compound.
In aqueous solution, creatine monohydrate undergoes a slow conversion to creatinine, a cyclized degradation product. This reaction is pH- and temperature-dependent, and it proceeds faster in warm or alkaline conditions. Because the conversion is gradual, analytical measurements of creatine in solution must account for time and storage history. The equilibrium favors creatinine more strongly at higher temperatures, which is relevant to sample handling in laboratories and to beverage formulations. Refrigeration slows but does not entirely stop this process.
Identity and purity are assessed with several complementary methods. High-performance liquid chromatography can separate creatine from creatinine and related impurities, often with ultraviolet detection. Nuclear magnetic resonance and infrared spectroscopy provide structural confirmation, while Karl Fischer titration measures water content. Elemental analysis and mass spectrometry may be used for additional confirmation, especially in research or forensic settings. No single method captures every quality attribute, so laboratories typically combine results and compare them against a specification.
Creatine monohydrate is sold as a dietary ingredient in some countries and as a food supplement in others. Regulatory frameworks vary, so purity limits, labeling rules, and permitted claims are not globally uniform. In the United States, it falls under dietary supplement rules, whereas the European Union treats it as a food supplement ingredient. Pharmacopeial monographs, where they exist, can provide public quality standards, but not every product is required to meet them. Questions about long-term effects and patterns of use remain areas of active study rather than settled regulatory findings.
Solid creatine monohydrate is generally stable when kept cool and dry, but it can hydrolyze to creatinine over time. Moisture, heat, and acidic conditions accelerate this conversion, which reduces assay values and changes the material's properties. Creatinine is a cyclic dehydration product that is also a normal human metabolite, so its presence in a sample is not necessarily a health concern by itself. In quality testing, creatinine is monitored as a marker of degradation and purity.
== Functions == LCRs were originally thought as 'junk' regions or as neutral linkers between domains; however, experimental and computational evidence increasingly indicates that they may play important adaptive and conserved roles, relevant to biotechnology, heterologous protein expression, medicine, as well as to our understanding of protein evolution. LCRs of eukaryotic proteins have been involved in human diseases, especially neurodegenerative ones, where they tend to form amyloids in humans and other eukaryotes. They have been reported to have adhesive roles, function in excreted sticky proteins used for prey capture, or have roles as transducers of molecular movement, e.g. in the prokaryotic TonB/TolA systems. LCRs may form surfaces for interaction with phospholipid bilayers, or as positive charge clusters for DNA binding, or as negative or even histidine-acidic charge clusters for coordinating calcium, magnesium or zinc ions. They may also play important roles in protein translation, as tRNA 'sponges', slowing down translation in order to allow time for the correct folding of the nascent polypeptide chain. They may even function as frame-shift checkpoints, by shifting to an unusual amino acid content that makes the protein highly unstable or insoluble, which in turn triggers fast recycling, before any further cellular damage.
== Thenford gardens and arboretum == The Heseltines purchased Thenford House and its grounds in 1976. The house was bought privately with the aid of a large loan, and they are thought to have paid around £750,000 (approximately £7.58m at 2025, RPI prices), and to have spent a similar sum on renovating the property. They also own a number of farms in the area. Over the next 25 years they restored 40 acres (16 ha) of woodland together with the walled garden, medieval fish-ponds, and a 2 acres (0.81 ha) lake. There is also a sculpture garden, which includes a large bronze bust of Lenin, from Latvia. At the turn of the century they decided to create various ornamental features in the garden and increase the range of trees and shrubs in the arboretum. Covering over 70 acres (28 ha) the arboretum is stocked with over 3,000 different species. Their arboretum was featured in a one-off documentary on BBC Two in December 2005. In October 2016 the Heseltines were featured on BBC's Gardeners' World, discussing their garden at Thenford House, parts of which were modelled after the gardens at Château de Villandry. The garden is open to the public by appointment only.
Hypothyroidism when untreated may lead to infertility and an increased risk of miscarriage or infant death around the time of birth, mostly in severe cases of hypothyroidism. Women are affected by hypothyroidism in 0.3–0.5% of pregnancies. Subclinical hypothyroidism during pregnancy is associated with birth of the baby before 37 weeks of pregnancy.

=== Mineral resources === Ningxia is rich in mineral resources with proven deposits of 34 kinds of minerals, much of which located in grassland areas. In 2011 it was estimated that the potential value per capita of these resources accounted for 163.5 percent of the nation's average. Ningxia boasts verified coal reserves of over 30 billion tons, with an estimated reserve of more than 202 billion tons, ranking sixth nationwide. Coal deposits are spread over one-third of the total surface of Ningxia, and mined in four major fields in the Helan and Xiangshan mountains, Ningdong and Yuanzhou (or Guyuan). The region's reserves of oil and natural gas can be found in Yanchi and Lingwu County, and are ideal for large-scale development of oil, natural gas and chemical industries. Ningxia leads China in gypsum deposits, with a proven reserve of more than 4.5 billion tons, of which the rarely found, top-grade gypsum accounts for half of the total deposits. The Hejiakouzi deposit in Tongxin County features a reserve of 20 million tons of gypsum with a total thickness of 100 meters. There is a considerable deposit of quartz sandstone, of which 17 million tons have been ascertained. In addition, there are phosphorus, flint, copper, iron, barite, other minerals and Helan stone – a special clay stone.
== In other organisms == Many bacteria synthesize menaquinones from chorismic acid. They use it as a part of the electron transport chain, playing a similar role as other quinones such as ubiquinone. Oxygen, heme, and menaquinones are needed for many species of lactic acid bacteria to conduct respiration. Variations in biosynthetic pathways mean that bacteria also produce analogues of vitamin K2. For example, MK9(II-H), which replaces the second geranylgeranyl unit with a saturated phytyl, is produced by Mycobacterium phlei. There also exists a possibility of cis–trans isomerism due to the double bonds present. In M. phlei, the 3'-methyl-cis MK9(II-H) form seems to be more biologically active than trans MK9(II-H). However, with human enzymes, the naturally abundant trans form is more efficient. One hydrogenated MK that sees relevant amounts of human consumption is MK-9(4H), found in cheese fermented by Propionibacterium freudenreichii. This variation has the second and third units replaced with phytyl.
On 1 September 1998, 13 police forces raided alleged members of an international child pornography ring known as the Wonderland Club. The operation was code-named Operation Cathedral and resulted in the confiscation of 750,000 images and videos depicting 1,263 different children. Mendonça was among the few children (just 16 in total) that could be identified. However, his whereabouts remain unknown. Police suspect that he was murdered by his abductors after being abused on camera for other members of the child sex ring. In Switzerland, a boy was heard saying in a restaurant in 2007: "I was also kidnapped. I'm from Famalicão and for me no one is looking." Police informed the family that the lead was not consistent. It was also highlighted that the boy could have been Rui Pereira, who disappeared two days before Rui Pedro. In later years, Rui Pedro has been identified in pictures regarding the child sex ring and the worldwide Operation Cathedral movement.
== Signs and symptoms == The course of Alzheimer's is generally described in three stages, with a progressive pattern of cognitive and functional impairment. The three stages are described as early or mild, middle or moderate, and late or severe. The disease is known to target the hippocampus, which is associated with memory, and this is likely to be responsible for the first symptoms of memory impairment. As the disease progresses, so does the degree of memory impairment.
== Career == After obtaining his PhD, Shaw spent six years working at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, where he was a supervisory research chemist and the chief of the radioimmunoassay laboratory. He then worked at Mercer University in Atlanta for a year as an assistant professor of pharmacy, before beginning a twelve-year stint at Smith Kline Beecham Clinical Laboratories, also in Atlanta. From 1991 until 1996, he worked at Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri.

Solid product can remain within specification for years when stored dry and sealed, but expiration dates reflect manufacturer testing and regulatory conventions. Moisture and heat increase conversion to creatinine, so storage conditions matter more than the printed date alone. Degradation is gradual and can be monitored by purity testing.
Purity is typically evaluated by chromatographic separation with ultraviolet detection, sometimes supported by spectroscopic identity tests. Moisture and creatinine content are common quality parameters. Results depend on the analytical method, sample preparation, and specification limits.
Clumping occurs when powder absorbs moisture, causing particles to stick together. Humidity, temperature changes, and repeated container opening promote this effect. Clumps do not necessarily indicate chemical degradation, but they can affect weighing and mixing.
It is a crystalline form of creatine that contains one water molecule per creatine molecule. The compound occurs naturally in muscle tissue and is also produced synthetically for research and consumer products. The monohydrate label describes the solid's hydration state.
